You know that rich, flavorful red pasta sauce you can’t resist? Yep, that’s tomato sauce or marinara sauce, straight from the heart of Italy! It’s the superstar base for countless mouthwatering recipes you adore. And guess what? Making it is a breeze with just six simple ingredients: ripe tomatoes, fragrant garlic, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of pepper flakes for that kick, some aromatic basil, and a dash of salt to bring out the magic. It’s the secret to unlocking the deliciousness in your favourite pasta dishes and more!

Let’s Talk Versatility

Okay, so you made the sauce; now, what are you going to make with it? First, of course, you’re going to make the pasta and pair it with some delicious romano cheese (you can’t go wrong. But there are so many other dishes you can make with this super simple recipe. Lasagna: So I am the Italian who doesn’t really like lasagna; however, this tomato sauce is perfect for spreading between your lasagna layers to make that baked goodness. Meatballs: Your meatballs need a bath to simmer in, and this red pasta sauce recipe is perfect. Not only will your meatballs come out amazing, but your sauce will have a delicious flavour made possible by your meatballs. Pizza: The foundation of your favourite slice is often a classic red tomato sauce, which makes this recipe perfect for family pizza night! To Dip: Having mozzarella sticks, fried eggplant, or zucchini? Red pasta sauce makes for the perfect dipper for some of your favourite appetizers.

The Secret Really Is In The Sauce

So you want to know the secret to the perfect red pasta sauce? It’s simple: it comes down to your tomatoes. For the best tomato sauce, you want to use San Marzano tomatoes. Yes, they are more expensive, but they really do make your sauce so much better. These tomatoes are heartier and contain less water, which leaves you with a richer, more delicious sauce. If you can’t get your hands on some San Marzano, Roma tomatoes are another good option, but overall, look for cans with Italian tomatoes. Next, you want to be using some fresh ingredients. I always recommend using fresh basil and garlic since they’ll bring more flavour to the dish. Lastly, extra virgin olive oil will be your best friend in any Italian dish. Be sure not to be confused with regular olive oil since it doesn’t have the same taste or depth as extra virgin.
