In my biased opinion, these are one of my favourites. Roma tomatoes are perfect for simmering down into the most perfect tomato sauce you’ve ever had. They are a great alternative to San Marzano tomatoes if you don’t have those growing in your backyard. These tomatoes are also great in an Italian tomato salad with olive oil, basil, and garlic.
Cherry Tomatoes
The cherry tomato is the perfect topper tomato. Add these to bruschetta, dips, tossed in a salad, chicken and so much more! These tomatoes are perfect if you’re looking for a tomato that’s going to hold its shape. Not to mention the touch of sweetness will elevate any dish you’re adding it to. The cousin of the cherry tomato is also the grape tomato, use them interchangeably.
Heirloom Tomatoes
The second-best tomato on this list has to be the heirloom tomato. These tomatoes are oddly shaped and come in a variety of colours. If you’re looking for a tomato to add a pop of colour to your dish, just grab a couple heirloom tomatoes. These tomatoes are also great in sandwiches or used for a delicious toast.
How to Store Fresh Tomatoes
The short answer is not in the fridge. Your tomatoes will last longer if you keep them out on the counter. When you add them to the fridge, tomatoes tend to lose their flavour and end up just tasting bland (no thanks).
If you’re only using half a tomato and plan to use it in a reasonable amount of time (another day), I recommend placing the cut side on a plate or bowl and also leaving it on the counter (you’re thank me later). For recipes that are tomato-heavy, consider finishing them the same day, as they most definitely will not be as good the next day if they’re still fresh tomatoes.
